Spring runoff had caused localized flooding along the Cache la Poudre River in Fort Collins that year, washing away the bank in places and exposing the roots, still clinging tenaciously to what was left. The Dipper stayed and fed along this stretch of river most of the winter. The dark plumage that hides him so well in summer is so easy to spot on ice.
